When I actually got it work I used JB Weld which is a high strength epoxy.  The cap just screws off.

Looks great.  What did you use to glue it together?  Epoxy?  Bondo?

Also, how did you get the cap off?  Mine seems pretty committed to the globe.  It is 45 years old....
