This was one of the mock-ups for the infamous Soap Lake Lava Lamp project. Yes, someone was actually suggesting building this. Bend a few laws of physics and it might work.

I love the shot; of course, if it were real, the bulb would be so huge and hot it would roast the people on the catwalk. So that's a downside. ;)
