Pete, The glass vials contain a liquid with a low boiling point, usually methylene chloride. Underneath the green and red housing there is a 5w-miniature screw type bulb that brings these bad boys to a boil and puts on quite a show! Fill your tree with enough of them it will really bring it to life.
PS: I am guessing they are 5w, they hold a pretty decent sized filament, can't find any markings on the screw and they are sealed. Once the bulb goes out the entire bubbler assembly is garbage. You MIGHT be able to crack it open at the color seam but chances are the plastic would just break oddly.
Carol, after checking again, I take back that they don't daisy chain! The do in fact allow multiple sets to link together!
How do they work Nick ?
The ones that Critter linked are the exact ones I have on the tree :) I do have a few classic Noma bulbs but not enough to fill a strand. The reproduction sets work excellent and are affordable (possibly safer too). They bring a tree to life, only problem is you can't daisy chain them and they are polarized so they will not mate with standard light strings.
Thanks, Bill!
Carol. As far as I know these bubbler lights are still made new. In recent years I have bough many of them at various stores.all.were new production.
Wow I miss those bubbler ornaments!!!! My sister had a bunch of them on her tree years back and I always admired those. I looked on ebay for them. Have you saw what the $$ is for those now?
