Comment by VOXul on September 8, 2014 at 12:17pm: I remember the RadioShack/Spencer lamps too. This pair of lamps came from this odd store in the 90's named Dappy's. At least I think I remember it being called that. It was almost like a high end Spencers that showed up in our downtown outdoor mall. Carried similar items but reached out a little further to offer deeper oddities than your typical Spencers. They are long gone at this point.

Actually with these lamps I managed a deal. I was looking to buy one for my dad Christmas gift. Was looking at these two guys but they were pretty expensive. The Lightning 2000 I believe was retailing for $180 and the smaller standard plasma for $100. I was talking to the store clerk and waffling the purchase as that was a lot of money for me back in highschool, haha. Finally said I don't think I can buy either as they are a little pricey for my current work/fund situation. He said I understand but as I was walking out he tapped my shoulder and signaled I come over to the side of the store and talk quick. He said he would be able to get me out of the store with both lamps in hand for $150. I couldn't pass that up!

Comment by Carol on September 8, 2014 at 11:58am: That's one novelty lamp I miss!!! I still remember when they sold the high end glass ones at Spencer's and Radio Shack!!!! I saw a cheap globe at my local thrift store a few weeks back. Ran over to it, only to find it was cheap plastic and all scuffed up......

Comment by VOXul on September 8, 2014 at 10:38am: The dome on the left is a Lightning 2000 krypton based plasma dome. The one on the right, I believe, is a fairly standard neon plasma ball. The manufacturer of these specific models is the same but unfortunately they are not responsive to email contact and the items are no longer available. Once in a while the Lightning 2000 will show up on ebay but they tend to be expensive due to the gas involved with the dome and rarity of the item. They can also be found under White Lightning by Rabbit Systems.

Comment by VOXul on March 17, 2014 at 10:43am: Jim, I had seen a YouTube video of that White Lightning, thanks to you I now know it is made by Rabbit Systems.

Mine differs slightly in that it has a singular nob and a top cap over the glass, right above the output coil. It is most definitely modeled off of this unit though. The maker marks hidden within all the UL warnings and such reads from Lee Home Products. Their site is strange and shows the globe on page 25 I believe but broken images and no availability from them.
