Finally got the lava lamp I have desired for a long time.
Liquid was totally clouded, carefully drained and washed bottle.
Then a little experimentation, local tap water and 15% propylene glycol, about 10ml of surfactant seems to be working fine.
Thanks for the advice here.

Have just fired it up about 15 minutes ago and it does some rather strange twisted wax before it settles into bubbling
