Will do......hopefully I don't have to take the darn lamps down again!!! I have already taken them apart and cleaned the stinken globes 4 or 5 times, lol!!! I absolutely cannot stand streaks, film or anything like that...gets my OCD going!!! lol!!!
Thanks for the clarification, keep us posted on the long-term results!
Jus, I don't use dish liquid anymore except for the first wash. Then I clean the globe with Brakeleen or straight acetone (I like brakeleen better), then I rinse with distilled water. Coat the inside of my globe with surfactant, pour my wax, cool, then add the distilled water with my surfactant and top off with distilled. I goo kit now and use the surfactant that they supply. I'm sorry I made it sound confusing. The way I was cleaning my globes before was after I boiled them and got the wax soft and dumped the old wax, I would wash the inside of the globe with the boiling water and some dish liquid. Then I would rewash with my acetone, but instead of just rinsing the acetone out with water, I would rewash with dish liquid and I think that's why I would get the soap scum. I guess when you do your final globe wash with the brakeleen and acetone that is getting rid of any residue that is left from soap or oil or whatever. If one is going to rewash with the dish liquid after using the brakeleen, you are just leaving room for something else to leave a residue. So far doing it the new way my globes are staying clear.
I know! I'm hoping soon to try making some new lamps, and plan to post my results, if and when I have some to report.
that's a shame, jus. i remember when you made this one.
Carol, are you still using dishsoap? Not sure what you mean by "... but then I rewashed with dish liquid to get the acetone out, so now I'm leaving the soap scum reside in the globe..."
Guess what Jus? I've used the surf from goo kits and the distilled water and still seemed to be getting that "film" on the inside of the globe. Another member of OG also had this problem. We refer to the film as "streaks" but I've experienced just the film also. I've taken down those globes and used Brakeleen, but after using the Brakeleen, I rinse with distilled water a few times making sure to shake it well, but then I do not rewash the globes with dish liquid. I think that's what I was doing wrong!!! I've used acetone to make sure the globe had no reside left in it, but then I rewashed with dish liquid to get the acetone out, so now I'm leaving the soap scum reside in the globe. After I redid my goo kit with the brakeleen I also coated the inside of the globe before i poured the wax with straight surfactant where before I would dilute it with water. This seemed to help also. I haven't figured out what that "film" or "streaks" is, but I am slowly trying a process with my goo kits that is making it either less or it isn't coming back at all.
Thanks!
After posting this video, this lamp along with a few others began to turn cloudy. Upon opening the lamps for closer inspection, I discovered the fluid in the lamp was still very clear, but there was a film which had developed on the inside of the glass. I'm almost certain the film inside the glass is due to my having used Dawn dish soap as a surfactant. A safer alternative is surfactant available through gookits.com
I luv that color green!!!!
These are real deal neons!!
