That's a 1950s or 1960s "TV lamp," with a globe added. As long as it isn't wobbly, go with it!
A 40 watt appliance bulb should be good to use, however, if there is a lot of space between the bulb and the base of the globe it may not heat up right.
I 2nd what Keith said - looks like someone put a 52oz. globe on a base meant for something else. Does the globe fit in the base snug, or does it wobble around a lot?
I've never seen a base like that. Does it have any markings? The lava globe looks like a classic Lava lamp Century globe, nothing unusual there. I wonder if someone used a lamp base from something else?
