There is no glue or adhesive in the lid anywhere, the lid doesn't seem to be as thick a plastic as the cylinder so tap gently right where the two parts connect. It will fit back together snugly

I didn't crack either the blue cylinder or the lid with this tapping method against my palm. When I put the lid back on the top I have to pull somewhat to get it back off, it's a flush fit. Perhaps there was a trace amount of adhesive used in the assembly process but I cannot see remains of it anywhere. These pictures should be evidence that it is indeed possible to remove the lid without causing damage. 

What method did you use to try to open the ones you've had?
