Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Picked up for $40 off Craigslist. Y/P Grande. The guy is a printer. He had an order to print the base's. Wound up denting one. So here it is. Was able to straighten most of it out. Mainly got for the globe.

Ben, Great story. Wish I had better luck on Craigslist. Most postings near me they want way to much, and aren't worth the drive. The Grande I picked up was a great find though. Someone had a liqiud projector light posted, but it got snatched up before I had a chance to check into it. The liquid projectors are killer.

Happy Hunting Ben!!

PhishyLava, My Grande globe had a few of the same similar minor glass imperfections. Luckily they were on one side, and mainly hidden by the base. I just put the good side facing forward. So no one sees it. Thing is we still know it, LOL. Right about the changing it out to clear liquid. I find the clear seems to hide glass imperfections better, and seems to allow more light to show off the lava flow. What colors you thinking of going with? I am thinking of Orange/Clear for mine. I don't have an orange yet, but have wanted one for a longtime. Good luck with yours!!!!

Oh.....without a doubt, the smears on my globe pictured below CANNOT be fixed. They are absolutely 'baked' into the glass!!

I am hoping that when I gookit this Grande (this weekend probably...also, my first gookit), since the water will be clear, the smears and other imperfections will be (at least somewhat) less noticeable than they are now, with the blue water.

I had a grande with the glass smears like that, too. I think they are not able to be fixed, either. Cool score though!

Phishy Lava, if you figure out how two clean that globe, please post!  Several of us have globes with "china smear" and I don't know if anyone has figured out how to get rid of it.  :(

Turtle, MY swirls appear to be part OF the glass.....not wax stuck TO it.

When the lamp is off, the glass appears absolutely crystal clear. But when illuminated from the bottom, all these ugly imperfections magically appear. Thank you, China!   :(

Phishy Lava, I did one better than that, I'm the cop who buys CL lava after work, but at least for me I'm wearing a suit, not a uniform.  The guy yesterday I bought from probably wondered why a guy in a suit was buying his old lava lamps.  It was another screaming deal--he was selling a china 52oz blue/white globe for $5, and without asking for a better deal, he said he'd throw in a free 32oz clear/green, which turned out to be made in 2000.  Great deal!

I see you use the seat belt technique too! Nothing like having a Lava Grande for your passenger. Imagine if we had a colossus in the seat. :) Anybody got one itching to go for a ride? I'll be glad to pick it up. LOL.

I bet that was weird going to the door, and a cop opening it. He might would have been leary of me with the long hair. LOL.

Mine was a swirly mess too! It has cleared up lots after running it a few times. I also use a torch candle lighter to help melt the wax stuck to the side of the globe. You can pick one up a wal mart. What works for me is to let the lava lamp warm up the globe first. Then I take the torch candle lighter to the sides of the globe where the lava is stuck. It does a good job of melting the wax. Make sure you move it around and not stay in one place. So far this trick works for me.

Good luck with getting it to clear up.

The globe is a swirly mess, but for $40, i'm happy.

That's funny. I picked up a B/Y Grande off Craigslist on Saturday for $40 too!

The guy answered the door in his police uniform. I was like huh? He had just gotten off work.

Lamp belonged to his daughter who moved away to college. LOL. For a second, I thought maybe "lava lamp" was the new Craigslist code word for hookers.
