My first lamp.

Hi all, I think I went totally manic the other day when I found this site, so bear with me. A mere 36 hours ago I started the process. I've been tweaking it for about 24 hours.  …Continue

My First Lava Lamp was:
Found an old one in storage, it was about 23 years old. I tried to revamp it by filtering it's fluids. But I lost too much of the fluids and I didn't really get them clean. So I used the 33% perc and 66% wax to make the ooze. Once I had tested it to approximately 1.03 Specific Gravity, I added my water, just a couple cubic mm of dawn dish soap and 5 teaspoons of canning salt! I may have added too much salt, after hours of sitting the ooze seems to be settling toward the top.

My New Method to Create 1/3-2/3 Ratio "Perc" - Wax Ooze in 5 Minutes.

After spending about 4 hours trying to make perfect 1/3 - 2/3 volume ratio ooze (being super anal like I am, it is quite difficult to heat and cool the ooze quickly and get any sort of accurate volume measurement), I had a thought; why not just use mass instead of volume? Duh. I don't know if it is going to work yet, the Lava Lamp is heating up right now.

Simply use a scale (a cheap letter scale works fine) to measure 1/3 perc and 2/3 wax by mass. I used a plastic container…

Unforeseen Consequences

After stabilizing for a few days, my first ooze batch separated into a light ooze and a heavy ooze and it seemed no matter what I tried the lamp stopped working. I bought a dimmer switch to tweak the heat, but it didn't seem to do much. The light ooze was floating on top of the water and had a slightly pink color to it (the original lamp had red lava in it and I think I didn't clean the spring completely) and the heavy ooze was static at the bottom.

I started over with fresh paraffin… Continue

Unfortunately I didn't document the early process.

Yesterday, Saturday January 8, 2011, I started my first Lava Lamp Project (using an old Lava Lamp I had laying around). I found a formula at:

http://www.oozinggoo.com/ll-form5.html

I followed the instruction as close as I could with my limited jars/scales etc. to try to be as accurate as possible. More on that later.…
