My First Lava Lamp was:
Black base Mediterranean with a glass cylinder, scrolled iron legs and red magma that my dad brought home in the early 70s. It worked really well. It was later declared a fire hazard by UL and would burn the absolute s*** out of you. Seems like it contained IPA for the clear fluid.

I loved that lamp! :-)
