Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Unfortunately my dimmer switch on my colossus is no longer working. It was always finicky, but recently stopped working all together. Has anyone replaced their dimmer switch? If yes, can you send me the website and part number you used?

Glad to help
BTY, If you noticed, the voltage is adjustable from 0-220V
Adjust it under load with a multimeter (analog preferred) with the lamp in the socket on the workbench prior to installing it, This will give the dial a wider range of adjustment

Thank you again Claude! Just ordered the 4000 watt dimmer. I’ll try to make a a video when I replace it. If the quality of the video is ok, I’ll post a YouTube link, so someone someday will have it as guidance.

original dimmers were of the open frame type shown here
https://www.ebay.com/itm/311864590117?hash=item489c93ff25:g:IkQAAOS...

or

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B095PJ81W9?tag=amz-mkt-chr-us-20&ascs...

This is why they failed, the excessive ambient temp heat in an enclosed area ended up killing the life of the components

I used 4000-watt dimmers so they are overrated

I have also used 220v dimmers but all the adjustment is in the last 1/2 of the knob travel
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZNVQ3HY/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1&...

I can say that i haver NEVER had one of these fail on me

Claude can you please repost your last comment with the links for the parts for the colossus? We finally had nice weather up here in VT over the weekend, so I was a caught up doing yard work and was just getting back to this blog. Thank you!

This whole post is an excellent example of why this site is awesome!!  In the grand scheme of things what good are these lamps really, they have no real purpose except maybe to reduce stress but to each of us they can be particularly priceless.  I do not know why but maybe because of how the world has been the past 2 years but this discussion put a smile on my face.

Thanks Claude! My lamp has been out of commission for about 6 months, so this will get me moving in the right direction.
