Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello, I have redone a few lamps.

Actually 3 Grand lamps with no problem and a medium size lamp.

However the latest one takes about 5 hours to get going.

Once it's going it's great and flows properly and everything.

Anyone know what's up and what I can do to it to make it better?

Thanks.

Grandes always take a while to get gioing

Simple physics-More mass =Longer time to heat.

Try wrapping a towel around it to capture the heat until its flowing

Hello.

My Other Grand and my Sister's one take about 3 hours to get going.

There is something not right with it.

Depending on the year of production, the bulb height varied in height

Check the distance of the bulb to the globe in comparison to other lamps that flow faster

Will do that, thanks.

You release the lamp assembly with the nut under the felt bottom

the other end of the threaded rod that holds the socket is set with lock-tight

you need to heat the upper part of the threaded rod with butane lighter where it is screwed to the socket in order to get it to release and disassemble

'you can find replacements threaded rods in various heights at any any hardware store

You can also can use two different sizes with a coupling

The bulb should not be any higher than the rim of the base where the globe sits

Hello Claude, I just realised that I'm using the same base for different globes..lmao.

So that's obviously not the problem.

I get bored and change them every so often.

Have currently got a yellow globe and a purple globe.

Both have been redone, yellow one is great and purple one takes 5 hours.

Used the same amount of epsom salts etc.
Maybe something I can add to the purple one to make it work faster?

Question?
How many coils does each globe have?

I bet the Yellow has 2 and the purple only 1.

Try adding a 14" lamp coil to the purple so its sits center of the existing coil and transfers the heat better

Check my previous posts about opening and resealing grande's

If that is not the issue,

Id add some propylene glycol or dissolved Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salts) dissolved solution to adjust the specific gravity

Make sure the magnesium solution is fully dissolved and filtered prior to adding it.

Only go this route IF the goo is soluble and just sitting there but not flowing until real hot

All my new grandes average just about 4 hours to start doing something. Temp in the apt will affect the warm up time either shorter or longer.

That is why I use them on timers :)
