Wow that's weird Jonas in a good way!!!  I was thinking of suggesting mini twinkle xmas lights, but then thought it might detract from the lava......but that sounds beautiful!!!

Awesome! I've seen a few things done instead of flowers. One I did once that was pretty involved filling the bowl, edge-to-edge as much as possible and to about 1-2" below the rim with green florist foam. I used the handle of a pair of pliers to press a zig-zagging groove all the way around, then took a short (around 15-20 bulbs) string of mini Christmas lights and pushed the wire into the groove so only the bulbs poked up. Then, the remaining surface was filled with broken automobile safety glass, though I later tried glass pebbles.

Keith is your son a dinosaur buff too?  My Joey now 17 grew up with a keen interest in them.  When he was 5 years old we took him to see the new Jurasic Park, and he didn't take his eyes off of the screen the whole time while most kids were horrified!!!  We just saw the newest one in 3 D!!  It was realy good, but gotta say different....He also has the dvd collection of all 3 JP's.......he also had the spinning novelty lamp from the 80's which looked like the dinosaur's walking!!!  I'm kind of mad I gave it away...

I've seen some use stones in those too Ben if you're not a flower person!!!  Some like dried like popourre (sp?) stuff can be used also......I've seen blacklight reactive stones in one planter and I think it was one of our fellow OG members that did it but can't remember who right now.....(it was a rough 80's, lol)....Michael's Arts and Crafts or any arts/crafts store has some nice stones.  I especially like the marble/glass ones but they are flat.  Some have like that cat's eye in the middle and do nicely in the dark to reflect the light....take a walk through the aisles of your local arts and crafts store.  You'd be really surprised with the ideas you would come up with.....that's what is nice about those planter designs.....

I'd like to get some fake flowers, but not sure where to buy them. I guess Walmart probably has something.
