DIYers- what kind of bottle capper do you own?

I have a couple crappy modern spencers lamps that aren't worth turning on anymore, and I want to use them for experimentation.  Problem is, I have no idea how I would reseal it without a bottle…Continue

Trying to crack the original formula- why was kerosene used?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Tevfik Dogruman 2 hours ago. 132 Replies

In my quest to figure out exactly what the original formula is, one thing I haven't figured out is why they used Kerosene in the mixture.  It seems like it was a very small part of the mixture,…Continue

Looking for a mid 90's, Blue Base, Blue Lava, Clear Liquid lamp.

This was the very first lamp I had as a kid- and being a really dumb kid I decided one day to open it and "add more lava to it" by putting... candle wax... in it.  This is the only pic I can find…Continue

"The clear master fluid is simply distilled water and surfercant (the base chemical for making soap, detergent or shampoo). I prefer SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate). Hexane is an organic substance like kerosene. It not will eat the wax and…"

"I keep thinking of the blob vs. stretch problem. We are pretty good at creating blobs, but not the stretchy effect. We found that thinner lava works, surf works, viscosity vs. hydrostatic pressure was notable. I think we missed a force, I think…"

"Just don't go crazy with the micro- that stuff has a very high melting point and once you start hitting ratios of 30% micro to 70% paraffin (even accounting for other additives like LP and kerosene) you'll find that the lamp will have a…"

"fork.. I will note this. maybe I will go the direction of more crystalline wax, hoping that will stop the heat dispersion. I also notice a lot of gold dust at the base, maybe I over did it there and it is unnecessarily collecting heat "

"I don't think you want to throw Alcohol in the mix, for the simple reason that its suuuuper light compared to water.  You'll end up compensating with a lot more PG/Glycerin, which as Autumn and I have found will cause clouding when…"

"Notice how hot the bottom was and how cold the top was (the speed they swapped). The problem may be that the wax is ultra hydrophobic... I think alcohol reduces this effect FYI (not talked about or tried yet on this website)"

"the reason they are a hit for us: - no drying/ hardening agents - has hydrophobic dispersant (something we can't get) - dispersant specifically meant to not alter melting point getting it to work.. thats all on us (i'm on it)"

BR4X replied to Ant Bee's discussion Trying to crack the original formula- why was kerosene used?
"the problem is that it changes the way the heat disperses and it drasticaly increases the surface tension on the wax.. in order to make it work better I need to use less.. maybe make some other adjustments. I've noticed 3 things TBH"
