"That picture was when I was warming up. You are right it was melted and hovering at the bottom. I turned it off and let it cool. Do I need to use a dimmer? I guess the cause might be it's a relatively old lamp?"
"Looks like it's not hot enough. If it was overheating all the wax would be completely melted and usuallys hovering on the bottom. The wax in your lamp is still solidified. Too cold. "
"It's been going for a few hours but not really moving. Either it's not getting hot enough or the wax is dead?"

I noticed you asked about adding food coloring in chat but didn't see you on any longer. Here is my method but it's highlighter pen ink, not food coloring!
