so i have this icky cloudy grande that im going to filter as soon the filter i bought gets here. ive been running it for the last few days 12 hours at a time to break it in and it flows okay but likes to form one big blob a little bit to often. what can i do to improve the flow?...surf maybe?

mine forms a lot of spheres at the top of the lamp, which is likely due to overheating.  do you have the lamp on a dimmer?

can't wait to see pics of the filtered lamp!

no. not on a dimmer. it takes like 6 hours to heat up. it flows okay for a while then forms a giant hovering blob that just sort of undulates for a while. eventually it breaks up but it will reform again after awhile.

i wanna see pics of your new grande!!!

maybe it will subside after you filter it?  i would alter one variable at a time, so filter first, then see if you still have the problem.  after that, it would make sense to add more surficant as you stated.

yeah i will see what happens after filtering first...ive been watching it closely today and it seems the longer it runs the better it flows so it may be a heat issue also its down on a tile floor and possibly in a drafty spot so tommrow imma try running in a different room up off of the floor.

it has great flow now!!!...after filtering i topped of the liquid with a bit of distilled water and added 4 to 6mls of miracle bubbles solution and it no longer does the "giant blob" thing! it has a very strechy snakey drippy flow now...LOVE IT!!!!

Great!

Any filtering tips?  I'm planning on doing one (or both) of mine once I finish off my second gallon of apple juice. ;)

i read a thread where autumn said to pour the liquid into the jugs and rinse out the globe and under the wax chunk then filter pump the liquid from the jugs into the lamp. this is really the best and easiest way cuz you can rinse out all the white junk that collects under the wax and see how clear the liquid is when pumping it back into the globe and the globe fills slowly so theres no foaming. it really was easy and very rewarding! i no longer fear cloudy lamps!!! lol ;)

oh yeah and another thing is if your doing a lamp with colored liquid when your done make sure you clean your filter out really really well before doing another lamp. after cleaning the ceramic part with the scrubby pad flush it out by pumping warm water through it till it runs clear.

Thanks for the tips!

Which filter did you end up using?  The MSR?  If so, was it the EX version (with the carbon core)?

i used a katadyn mini.  no carbon. i was told to stay away from anything with active carbon in it cuz it can strip the chemicals out of the liquid. most of the newer filters have carbon cores.

heres a pic of it http://oozinggoo.ning.com/photo/filtering-grande-002?context=user

heres the grande before http://oozinggoo.ning.com/photo/053?context=user

and after filtering http://oozinggoo.ning.com/photo/grandes-005/next?context=user

What is or where do I find the miracle bubbles solution?

its just kids bubble soap solution for blowing bubbles you can get it at the dollar store or walmart...it works great and doesnt make the wax bubbly like dish soap can. i bet gookit surf would have the same effect.
