Lava Lites 50th anniversary? Any thoughts on what new lamps may be released?

I hope we will see something real nice from LL since we will not be seeing another colossus run!

I saw that one on eBay... it was in decent shape, too.

Keith the lamp in the lower right looks to be the Expo. 70 souvenir light. Yep it is rare a few months ago one sold on ebay for about $225 so not horribly pricey. Some believe this light dates to 1967 but it does not. However, the Expo logo that was on the lamp was trademarked in 1967 and that trademark date does appear. But the lamp itself is from 1970. Neat little consort based lamp but to me not that good looking. If it is not the Expo lamp with logo it certainly appears to use the same base.

As for a 50th anniv, I know Johnny was joking (sorta), but seriously, a GREAT lamp with good flow, no stuck wax at the bottom, no crap in the coil, clear liquid and I'd be sold. So far, Lava Lite cannot seem to produce such a lamp.

I agree Erin! I would love to see a great from LL too! But I don't think LL has it in them anymore. We shall see what the 50th brings hoping for at least a Grande in a new color. However I'm still disappointed about no more Colossus! Oh well.

I'll chime in;

I've had poor flow from China lamps and would never buy one again.

The USA stuff from the 90's is great, as well as earlier lamps from the

60's & 70's.  I've been focusing my collection on the real deal; Mathmos

for over the 'pond'  They are so awesome that the US can't compare.

I would however buy a US 50th lamp if it looked cool, I could always

GooKit it.

Wow, Erin, that's cool to actually see one on Ebay!!!  I like the shape and the liquid looks kind of a watermelon color, although i'm sure it's off due to the camera, but I'm not really digging the writing on the globe.  I have a problem with haze, scratches, scuffs, fingerprints, you name it on my globes, I could only imagine tryng to watch my lava flow through writing!!  Haha!!

As far as China lamps, as I'm sitting here waiting for my coil to flip.......well you know the story.....yada, yada, yada......blah, blah, blah.........lol!!!

Mathmos 50th anniversary lamp, WITH writing on the globe!

Keith, I HATE that, lol!!!!  Gotta tell ya though, that is a NICE lamp, lol!!!!  Wonder IF I could get past the writing?? lol

That's so confusing! It says Expo67 and (c)1963 on the bottom of the glass globe. Thanks for the bit of history Bill. :)

Yep that is it Erin. Very good shape. It is not from '67 though. 1970 was the year it was sold for the "Expo 70" which was a big deal then. I was a very small boy in upstate NY then and I remember my folks being excited to go and taking us kids. I have only foggy memories of it though as I was very, very small. The 1967 date on the bottle only refers to the year that the "Expo" logo got its trademark assigned....the lamp is not quite that that old.

As far as I know, the Expo '67 lamp IS from 1967. The Expo continued until 1981 as "Man and his World," so there is a chance the lamp was later, but I'm not sure that Expo '67 souvenirs were made after the one-year fair; surplus was probably sold off after then, however. It can't have been sold at Expo '70, which was in Osaka, Japan and had no connection to Expo '67.

The management of The Blues Magoos, the first band to refer to themselves as "psychedelic," somehow managed to get Lava Corp. to allow them their own model-- the Psyche-De-Lite-- AND to sell it without the Lava name attached! How do we know it wasn't a knock-off? The Blues Magoos also, supposedly, toured with two "giant Psyche-De-Lites," one of which is pictured on the album cover: an Imperial!

The album cover is fascinating because it pictures band members holding two different conical lamps. The one a NY lava collector called the Apollo (since the similarly-shaped and colored Apollo capsule was part of the US's pavilion at Expo '67) is pictured, at lower right, with its black cap. Here, it's shown without any markings. Right foreground and background are two Blues Magoos Psyche-De-Lites, which are somewhat different from the so-called Apollo; they have a much longer base cone, the base is painted bright red to match the lava, and the cap is gold like a Consort. If you were a member of the Blues Magoos official fan club, a Psyche-De-Lite would cost you $9.95 with a coupon (claimed to be a $14.95 value). Though not sold as a Lava Lite, the ad mentions the red LAVA, the glowing red LAVA (emphasis theirs) but it also CAPITALIZES a lot of words to make them STAND OUT, so that's not necessarily definitive. No collector has, that we know of, found a Psyche-De-Lite, but three or four "Apollo" models are known. I believe Psyche-De-Lites must exist out there.

The lamp is from '67. The Expo. trademark date on the lamp throws people off though.
In the earlier discussion I was brain - farting and had the wrong date in mind as I mindlessly typed away. It had been a long and frustrating week at work though.....forgiveness should be readily granted as my work week was that bad. LOL

Agreed. The logo was likely trademarked some time before the Expo.

As for a 50th Anniversary lamp, I'm not sure what to suggest, as long as it isn't a resin base/cap and/or a 'skin' that goes over a globe. It probably should be something both collectors and the public will want to buy.

They might make the base gold as it is their fiftieth anniversary.
