Thift Shop Find - Star Lamp Fiber Optic Flower Lamp of Some Sort???

So my daughter and I went thrift store shopping today and she bought me this for 5.00.  As you can see from the pics, it is dated 1988.  The original price tag says 99.99!!!  I was just surprised to find it still in the box and in the plastic wrap.  Has anybody ever heard of one of these.  Shame I couldn't find the palm tree!!!

I've seen a pineapple one for sale on eBay. Hard to believe they were $100 back in the day! They are kinda cool though. Congrats on the cheap score!

Haaa, Erin, the Pineapple one is on the box too!!!  I kind of liked the palm tree one, but a Pineapple??  that's kind of weird.  The rose is pretty!!!  I can't believe it was still sealed in the bag from 1988.  This thirift store I go to does estate sales, clean outs, a lot of times they said people pass away and they get paid to clean out that person's house.  I guess maybe it was a gift and somebody just threw it in a basement, closet or attic or something.  Works fine though.  No signs of it being in the heat or anything.  I don't see too many around.  I have seen the same thing but it is a music box, but made by the same company.

Ya know Erin, as I explained to my kids, fiber optics back in the 1980's was kind of like the new thing.  It would be like us having a robot nowadays.  So when that first came out, I guess back then it was expensive because it was a new thing and it was kind of like a technological advance, so hence the expense.  That;s all I can come up with.  Lava's were more money back then too.  Better quality, but more money.  I remember paying like 40.00 bucks for my daughter's Wizard globe and like 29.99 for the globe!!!  Crazy right??!!  You have to buy the pieces separate and match them according to what base you wanted with what globe.  Remember that?  I thought that was a kind of cool idea.  I still remember when Spencer's actually sold the grande's.  I should have grabbed one then.

All I remember about fiber optics in the 80's is that I was in my early 20's and my bf's mother then had a large beautiful fantasia sitting on her tv.  He would never light it for me.  He was afraid something would happen to it.  He said his mom would kill him.  He would light it for me though.  I always did like special lighting even back then.  But again, it was the 80's.  My main thought back then was party, party, party, lololol!!!

I want the Pineapple.  If you ever come across one again on ebay.  Let me know please.

Ok j!!!!

PLASTIC fiber optics sold for a LOT in the 80s, which is surprising to me because they'd been on the market since the early 1970s. The first glass fiber optic lamps were a few years before that, and they always sold at high prices.

I know that the fantasia's command a nice price tag on ebay these days.  Some of the older ones anyway.  I'd be afraid after shelling out 5-700.00 and then parts on the lamp go, like the sprays for instance where does one get replacement parts?  That would be my concern.  NOT that I'm even close to having that kind of money to spend, but just saying IF I did, lol!!!

That's actually kinda cool!  Nice find....good for you!  Enjoy it.

Oh, I luv it Critter!!  The fact that my daughter bought it for me makes it special!!!!
