Looks pretty damn good to me Matt! Excellent work.
the white gunk on the bottom is still there I wonder if it is burn wax.
sorry my explanation not terribly accurate. I was playing mad scientist with this one. this is not the one with the paperwork it is the other one I found at the same time same era lamp with tube or sleeve inside the base. Erins goo is the nontoxic formula; in the lamp is the toxic formula; it is easy to add too much brakeieen. I did not try the combination of goo plain water and brakellen but it might work. it was to late to try once I had added the stuff in the old fluid.
Nice lamp tune up! Real smooth and stretchy!
Cliffed note of my bottom novel. Ever had white chunks in old wax? Have any experience or fixes to get rid of them?
I have a Century from 75, it has nice fluid and runs well but the wax seems to form chunks that appear white. I don't know if I am crazy but they seem to dwindle down the longer it runs. Problem is it seems they always come back when it cools, the surface of the cold puck have a cratered and craggy surface. Cycle repeats each run. Chunks tend to ruin the flow and overall independence of each blob since they poke out and tear into anything near them, forcing a solo column to pretty much dominate the globe. Any illegal chemicals to fix this?
Good to know, in case I ever come across a super old lamp!!!
Carol,
Yep brake cleaner like brakleen adds a bit of density to the wax and really helps to bring the wax back together.
Looks good Matt. I still think this lamp is older than the '69 date that was on the receipt you got with it, its a nice old lamp for sure.
Bill
it actually blends with the wax it is non toxic brake parts cleaner. I tried the salt water method and there was no flow so I put the old fluid back in. These older lamps have different ingrediants which are now banned from the marketplace. Technically it is illegal to sell the chemicals in older lamps Thus it is an illegal chemical composed lava lamp
Wow, interesting......so added some more wax and brakleen. I didn't think you could actually add brakleen to the fluid. I thought that was more of a cleaner/degreaser for cleaning the globes. I think I did read on here somewhere that someone had used that though. Does that have propylene glycol in it?
Yea...what? what?? lol!!!
