Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I have a lamp with a 40w bulb. The wax is attached to the metal wire at the bottom, but when I turn it on the wax just sits there in a lump without moving. Anything I can do? I can answer questions if necessary. It's a rather large re-branded lamp given to me at work.

Motion and Glitter Model 5200 inside the base, uses a 40w bulb. Discovered the wire hoop not at the bottom, gently moved it there and turned it on. It worked for a while, then just sat there with a big blob hanging in the liquid. Will a lava lamp overheat?
