Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

The wax in one of my lava lamps doesn't stick completely to its coil ring. It adheres to two or three places but the rest of the ring is filled with liquid. As a result, the wax just domes. Sometimes it starts to reach upward, but then it loses its "oomph" and just drops back down again. I understand that the coil may need to be cleaned, but that sounds time consuming and like a lot of work. Seems it would be a lot simpler and quicker to just drop in a fresh, new stainless steel coil. What do you think? Would there be any problem with just leaving the old coil in there and adding a clean, new one for the wax to adhere to?
