Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I bought a mathmos lava lamp a couple of years and I've hardly used it since but since I've recently turned it back on there's a lot of bits floating around in the wax . Does anyone know how to get rid of them or if its possible?

Are you sure it wasn't like that when you bought it?

I own a lot of old mathmos lamps, and it's a pretty common feature of the wax.
