What is this? am i going blind or is this some sore of a prototype?

its not a lava lamp base. its a vintage ceiling light fixture that looks similar to lava base with pin holes. i had to do a double take on that one too.
Fairly common 1960s ceiling-mounted fixture. The pinhole bases (Century, later Starburst Aristocrat and Carlisle) took the pinhole idea from countless 1960s lighting fixtures. This one, like many of the down-lights, has a Fresnel lens on the bottom (others may have had a clip-in metal or plastic louver). There were even fixtures that resembled a later-style Enchantress base, two cones meeting at their narrow ends - either as one or two mounted to a wall sconce, or as a cluster on chandelier arms.
I see these conical ones occasionally designed as a TV lamp, with a switch mounted on the base, and I've considered adding a weight in the bottom and putting a 52oz globe in it.
