Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends).

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

We have a special promo on the Colossus for serious buyers.   This will be the last time the Colossus will be seen.

Please see attached promo sheet with pricing included.

If you are interested please contact on my direct line at 630-496-6663.

Best regards,

Sadly these prices are outside of my discretionary funds, even though they include shipping.  I post it in hopes that someone here may be interested.

Ok, cuz I was gonna say Gwen.... lol.

I guess if you want to wear shorts and a t-shirt year round though, that's the way to do it.

no the heat is not by choice by any means, the building is old and we get the heat first so that when the unit with the thermostat gets up to 70 we have reached 90 sometimes.  We never have all of our radiators on and usually at least on window is open year round

Jim, that is pretty much what we do, t-shirts and PJ pants for the most part

Yeah, but it's kinda dissapointing that I can't run it for more than about 8 hours before it turns into hovering goo ball and needs to be "re-set".  I need to get my purple/pink up and running to see if it does the same thing.

No worries, it's just warming the water instead of the goo.  Any goo that hits the coil liquifies, decreases in density and rises until it hits cool water then it solidifies and decreases in density.  However, the goo often solidifies in an irregular shape that prevents it from contacting the coil again.  The solution for me has been to wait until all the water is heated then the goo is in the liquid phase away from the coil.

Sometimes I turn the lamp off or low so the goo will flow back onto the coil, then I have a little show when I turn up the heat...it's a great way to build a tree one branch at a time.

It is a purple/yellow.  I'll turn it off and see what happens this afternoon.  Glad I'm not the only one.  It's very disturbing to be able to see clean coils at the bottom of the lamp.

Hey, no doubt in my mind.  The clear/red flow is much better than the purple/yellow.  Like clockwork, right around 12 hours after starting, the purple/yellow has achieved the "abyss" again.  In contrast, the clear/red is still going strong after 14 hours.

The clear/red with the red heat lamp 250w bulb is awesome -- (thanks for blowing out Phillips bulb) -- check out these pictures.

Bridget T - How is your purple/pink running?

Blob flow, and i've let it cool down twice now.  Each time it gets nice flow for about 3 hours, then blobs on me.  I'm very not happy right now with it.

I hope to get the other one set up tomorrow to let it run.  If it's been sitting in the garage, I suppose I need to give it 48 hrs to warm up, but really don't want to.   Good to know your clear/red is behaving properly.

I have the blue/yellow...same goo.

Jethro- do you have a purple/yellow, too?

Thanks for the tips!

I think it's the yellow goo...

I thought we had a blue/yellow on the list....is it doing the same thing?

My bulb blew on the first run too! About 5- 6 hours into the first run. Thats not the only problem I had though when the truck came with lamp the globe was lying on its side! Iwas not happy when i opened the box a drop or two leaked out of the seal. I called Suzan and she was not happy about that at all. So when I fired up the lamp I got a little condensation leak under the rubber shrink seal. So in short Im getting a new bulb and pink/purple globe this week and I can keep both globes! Suzan is great person to deal with she gets a BIG A+++++++ with me!!! She really seems to know alot about the Lava Lite for sure!!

I ordered extra bulbs just in case of that problem. I hope mine isnt delivered like that =(

So does anyone have a yellow lava/purple liquid that's working correctly? Doesn't seem like it.I'm worried about picking mine up on Friday now.

So what's the consensus on what kind of timers, dimmers, and replacement bulbs that should be used?

This is going to be my first Colossus so I want to make sure i do things right.

Check the bottom of page 31 for bulb info.  Keep in mind it already comes with a bulb and you could always get the same one (available at Home Depot).  The lamp has a built in dimmer:  http://oozinggoo.ning.com/photo/dimmer
