Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I recently acquired a Consort lamp, that was advertised as flowing, but the wax just remains a blob at the bottom, also the coil has a lot of whitish junk under it. The wax looks original, but can't tell if the liquid is original or if it's been replaced with just plain water. It also said it had a wood base, but it's plastic.

Some consorts do have plastic bases, that is normal. The white junk in the wax is also normal, it also means the was is most likely original.

Now for your flow problem... Does the lamp have its reflector below the light bulb? Is the bulb 15 watts? If not you may try a 25 watt bulb. If that does not work than I would bet the lamp either died or got refilled with water. I am one of the unlucky people to get a water refilled lamp by a clueless individual. If the liquid is not original you can forget about ever getting that wax to flow again. I tried for weeks and went through 4 lamps trying to get the mixture right. Open the lamp and smell it. Is the smell really strong or faint? It should be really strong. You might also consider adding salt to the lamp to try and get it flowing, but I never really had success restoring a consort using that method. If nothing else you can always do a refill.

The lamp has the reflector and the bulb is 15 watts. Should I try a 25 watt bulb or salt and hand soap? The smell is very faint not strong at all. Most likely the liquid has been replaced with tap water. Probably I'll have to go globe hunting  at the thrift stores. Thanks for the info Autumn.

Try 25 watts. And good luck finding a replacement globe. In my almost 2 years looking I have yet to find one.

I'll try a 25 watt bulb. Sorry, not a replacement globe, just any lava lite globe to do a refill.

There ya go, a refill is the easiest option. Just be aware that out of the 4 refills I have done only 1 will flow on a 25 watt bulb without a dimmer, so be aware of that.

I'm getting some flow with a 25 watt bulb, some salt and a drop of hand soap. It's one blob every so often, but now more of the wax is at the top. Should I go back to the 15 watt bulb?
