Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Corroded heat coil

I've got a 52oz lamp that has work great for a long time, but was accidently left on for too long. Not sure if that's why the coil disintegrated or what, but at any rate, there are what looks like rusted/corroded pieces of it mixed into the was now. Is there anything that can be done to 'clean' the wax and replace the coil?
