Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I have just got a green fluidium base and cap from ebay. I am missing the heat glass shield. Does anyone know why i have a orinal pearl mathmos 40w goft ball. If i run this on this bulb i bet my base would melt. Does anyone know which is the correct bulb does it have to be a crown reflector bulb thanks.

As far as i'm aware, the heat shield was only required on the Opal and Orange variants of the Fluidium. Don't quote me though!
if you are using a 40w reflector bulb you don't need a glass heat shield as the heat is all directed upwards, but if you are using the 40w golfball bulb you will need a glass heat deflector to stop the base browning and melting.
this goes for all colour fluidiums. it is not the colour that determines whether you use a heat ring, but the type of bulb.
i have all colour fluidiums and some came with a heat ring, some didn't.
hope this helps.
thanks i have got a reflector bulb from mathmos so will try this, Don't know of any glass merchant nearby who would make me a glass shield.
John is your reflector bulb like a small spotlight or a 40w mirrored golfball?
i just ordered some from Mathmos and they have sent me 40w mirrored golfballs.
last time I got a fluidium bulb it was a small ses 40w spotlight bulb and now they say they have never done them.
I just sent a pic so hopefully they will find some.
This was the last one I got from mathmos, shown next to a 30w telstar/baby reflector.

well we're all gonna be buggered now, as mathmos no longer do the spotlight in 40w (they have been replaced by the golfball) and I have searched the internet far and wide, they are like gold dust apparently!! they are larger in size than the 30w spot but smaller in size than a regular R50 spot.
Typical, why don't they leave well alone-if something works why change it???
:(
I got these just before the Telstar was re-released and these were definately the bulbs that used to come with the Fluidiums.

I don't use them because i find they run the lamps way too hot even in a short space of time.

Luckily the lady at the Mathmos factory gave them to me for free just for travelling so far....sweet!

well, i have the mirrored goft ball bulb sent from mathmos your right they don't do any of the 40w reflector bulbs i will have a look on websites through. i think crompton is the make thank anyway.
if you find any let me know. i've scoured google!
I have just gor a yellow fluidium lamp and orange/violet bottle can i use the red boosting bulbs or will this melt the base. I don't have the heat shield which is a shame.
I would try an R50 reflector ses bulb in a Fluidium for colour boosting. My Fluidiums came with heat sheilds and golfball type bulbs originally.

I've seen lots of them in the shops (hopefully they still have some) and noticed they had red/blue and green R50's but have never tried one myself.

I had an orange juice lamp that came with one but it was too hot and seeing as the globe is half the size of a Fluidium globe then i'm really not suprised it went bubbly mad!!

B&Q sold a pack of two priced between £4 - £5.
