Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

What causes  the inside of a globe to  have a film? Old wax? Surf breaking down? Should I goo kit this one? I have had  my 32oz midnite lamp since 2004.. Its been really clear untill recently this film look started.  Thanks for the info..

Sometimes it's the fluid being cloudy, sometimes there is a film. Check the top of the bottle above the fluid line - is it clear ot does it have a film? That will give you your answer about which is hazy - the bottle or the fluid.

I recently tried to clean a early 2000s globe that I thought had a film on the inside but it turned out the liquid was cloudy.

The film on the globe can come from using too much heat or running the lamp non-stop. My guess is it's wax residue.

Good luck!

Ok.. The top does look clear.. I do have dimmers on my lamps and also I do know not to run them longer than 10hrs.  I was going to revamp it today anyway ,I just thought I would ask.. Does old wax stick? And does the surf breakdown over the years?

Old wax doesn't tend to stick on 90s Lava Lite globes. I'm not sure what the haze could be from. You could always try and filter the globe. Over MANY years (20+), surf and wax can break down, yes. Look at lamps from the 60s and 70s - they will have a haze to the liquid oftentimes and sometimes, white junk around the coil.

I believe the film is actually mold forming on the glass. I have seen this in several globes and its easily fixed by scrubbing the inside with a small brush ( think fish tank brush ). You can do it while cold and full, just remove cap, scrub, replace cap. I scrubbed 3 that were hazy and it has not come back yet. A few other members used the same fix and had great results.
