Sometimes I've seen wax get "cooked" or overheated. When this happens, you can (but not always) see little chunks/flakes in the wax when it's fully heated. Or sometimes you get bubbles in the wax. If you have lamps from 2003, it's not likely that there's a problem with the wax unless someone ran it on a 60W bulb for days on end.

However, I've noticed that some US-made Lava Lites around 2002-2003 have funky issues with wax.

With my old china lamp (my very 1st lamp) the wax in it is dead and the sings of that were basically the slowing down of flow until all flow of wax stopped altogether no-mater how long it was left on for.

I am going to refill it with another lamp which i will goo kit - that's a project I will do at some time.
I can confirm what you are saying Erin .. The Green mathmos lamp i have, is supposed to run with a 30 watt bulb, but ran it with a 40 watt bulb for a long period where it would be on for a whole day.. (this was before i knew what you guys have learned me!) and now it has lots of chunks in the wax.. A shame though ..
