Goo Sticking to the Sides

I've read everything I can find on how to deal with lava that gets stuck on the sides so I'm well versed on that but I'm wondering if the lave could be sticking to the sides because it's just old/compromised lava. And if so, is there anything you can add to the lava to help it not stick to the sides? I have a hard time with SURF. Coating the inside of the globe always turns the lamp cloudy and makes the lava flakey.
