I don't know how people can do this to any creature, human or otherwise.. :( There are times when I look at her and think someone must have loved her at one time.. but ... if you love your pet you don't allow them to be in the kind of condition she came to us in and none of these problems were 'new'. Her heartworm was stage 1 which means she didn't have any real damage but her heart had started to balloon a little but not enough to be considered stage 2. She had some minor complications during the process because a male worm died in her lung and it basically gave her pneumonia-like symptoms. Her tapeworm was large enough to cause vomiting and make her unable to gain weight, and her breasts were so engorged we were afraid it was tumors in the beginning, thankfully it wasn't but it took 2 treatments to shrink them down and heal them up :(
She's had a rough start but she's amazingly loving and gentle.. she's a special one :)

Bless you, Cherry. I have a couple of rescues. I wish I could rescue them all - so much good in this world (I'm an optimist), but admittedly, so much sadness, too. Thanks for being a part of the good!
I would love to work at a rescue shelter but I would bring home every single stray and I don't know if I could take it seeing some of the animals that come and go.. since my friends dog went missing (that's how we found Daisy) I've seen more horrific things at shelters than I ever thought possible.. but I try to do my part.. donate money & talent, and I am a vegetarian -- so all around I am animal friendly. :)

Amen!! Bless Cherry and everyone who rescues stray and abused pets. We've done it for nearly 20 years, and these babies having medical care and a loving home are worth it all. They are spoiled rotten and love it!! So do we.
They are all precious, Sam, good for you!!!

These are My rescues
I would be traumatized for life even going in a shelter, Cherry, and also would bring them all home. My husband has to do it. I'm afraid I'd go ballistic and "hurt" someone if I knew who did these horribly cruel things to our canine and feline babies. I am so glad none of us are "wrapped like that." I think they are serial killers in the making, really. I have to mute the TV and turn my head, when those ASPCA commercials come on too. Our babies have had to be rehabilitated by us, due to terrible treatment, but are now precious, healthy and happy, thank God. Our 14 year old miniature Poodle rescued from a puppy mill is very sick right now, and I am beyond nerved out. We just cannot take the grief anymore after 20 years. We also have a Chihuahua rescued from a drug addict. I got him when he was 6 months old, and he is still scared to death around strangers and will be 5 years old this month. Pitiful.....

I've always wanted to work with animals (rescue/vet), but my severe allergies have kept me from doing so. I'd have to take medication every day just to be around them. I give thanks to anyone and everyone who's taken in a rescue. I will never understand how someone can abuse an animal, but sadly, it's all-too-common.
Here's an update of some of my flock. This is Nico and Chirpa. Nico has splayed leg, so he's sort-of a rescue (as in no one wanted him) and Chirpa is our oldest at nearly seven. Nico is getting preened by Chirpa - one of his fave things since he can't groom himself so well on account of the legs.
That is so sweet for Chirpa to do that for Nico, Erin. Animals and birds are much more empathetic and intelligent than they are given credit for being. They know when we are sick too and try to comfort us. Where's Sir Nigel? :-)
Daisy got her very first toy yesterday!!
She's having her second (and final!) round of heartworm treatment today/tomorrow.. and I am missing her something fierce :(
Isn't she adorable!? She had such a hard time the first round of treatment, I had no idea how much stress she was in until I called to check on her today.. they told me last time she was pawing at her cage and screaming (they didn't say crying, but screaming!) this time they said she is doing great and sleeping it off! :)
She's technically not allowed to play or anything so I figured a nice 'quiet' type of toy would do well for her, she ran through the house carrying it and slept with it last night! I think she's happy :)
