Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I've got this Chinese Grande that was terrible when I received it.So cloudy you could barely see any Lava motion, and it usually would just sit there detached from the coil in 2 places.

Got a Goo-Kit and I still have a coil problem.Wax will not stick from the 12-3 o'clock positions, and from the 5-7 o'clock positions.Wax refuses to have anything to do with the coil in those 2 sections.

The Goo seems to flow pretty good, although sometimes the bare spots allow some water to be drawn into the wax there, and bright light comes through in those spots also because of the gaps in the wax at the bottom.

Thinking the coil to be bad,I tried rotating it 180 with a long stick to see if the problem would follow the coil.It didn't.Those areas of the coil that wouldn't stick now have wax on them fine, but the bare spots are still at the same 12-3 and 5-7 o'clock positions of the globe.

Has anybody ever had a bad globe? This is a Grande from 2004

I tried it on a different base.Same problem.

I tried turning the globe on the base 180,and the bare spots followed that.I marked the areas on the globe where the problem is.No matter how I position the coil,or the globe, the wax refuses to stick in those 2 areas.

I've got a very good understanding how these lamps work, and have a few Goo-Kits completed with excellent results. However, this one has got me stumped.

Any ideas?

Hi Grace and welcome to OG!!   There is a very good Lava Library and Archives on this site that is very helpful.  Try this link and see if it helps with your coil problem.   If you still need help, just holler back on this same thread and someone will answer you when they catch a chance!   Again, welcome!

U need to clean that coil really good. Latex gloves, toothbrush, Degreaser, and rinse, then change gloves. then boil in distilled water. Never handle the coil without gloves after its clean. That should help

With all of the varied quality control issues china lava lamps have had it could very well be some sort of manufacturing residue in the globe.  I know some of the grande globes have some sort of residue on the outside.  I have one that I have not been able to clean completely.

I have some 52oz like that as well... China globes

I have some China globes like that too, and it will not come off no matter what you use to clean it.  Looks like some kind of gunky film and smears.

Im going to make mine targets next time u go shooting lol

Sounds like a plan to me!!   I have several I'd like to pop a cap on too.  And I ain't talkin "soda cap."   lol

Update-

I fixed the problem with the Grande. At the 2 spots where the wax wouldn't stick,it actually looked like it was trying to repel from the glass at those spots. There were 2 slight hazy areas like something was on the glass surface.

That globe was cleaned a few times before I did the GooKit,but you had to look very very closely to see these smears of whatever. They are barely noticeable without a magnifying glass.

I emptied the globe, and my husband cleaned and scrubbed those areas with something from the garage.I don't think it was gasoline, but something else? The smeared spots are gone now,and the lamp is flowing perfectly. The wax is nice and happy at the bottom of the globe.

Must have been remnants of some kind of nasty film left inside from the factory. My cleaning with detergent and hot water a few times would not even touch it.
