Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I found what appeared to be a lava lamp left in a college dorm. However, it seemed to use a single liquid of thin consistency, like water with food coloring. It had a halogen bulb under the base, some kind of power inverter, and also an air pump. The bulb needs to be replaced, but I had to dump the liquid out to transport it and now am wondering what it could have been, since it doesnt seem to comply with any of the plans or formulas for lava lamps I've seen online. Any ideas?

This is most intriguing, a lava experiment perhaps, who knows..
I think maybe the pump is to assist with the lava motion or bubbling perhaps?
when I poured the liquid out though it was of one, thin consistency - it didnt seem like there was any oil or wax in it
heres a picture of the whole thing. the tube is made of plastic

This looks like a "fish tube aquarium" where plastic fish float at various levels and motion is added by the bubbles from the air pump.

Yeah i thought it was a fancy bong for the moment.. LOL
