Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

From Electric Planet in the UK.

Cant wait, does anyone know how long it takes to get one shipped to the US east coast?

After watching that video of their manufacturing process, I knew I had to have one :)

I'm supposed to be paying bills, instead I'm buying LL's!!

Maybe finding this forum wasnt such a good thing afterall, I'm just too weak!! :\

You will never forget your first Mathmos, I'm sure you will be 'over the moon'. Know what you mean about joining the forum, I only joined a month ago myself. Most of the U.S. lamps (I have three in my collection) are new to me, I love the Wizzards, Swirls and Snakeskins but have never seen them in the U.K.

I got a orange lava with violet liquid (though some call it red, looks orange to me :)

Hey Stanley,

You should expect to receive your EP order in about 3-5 business days.

This is how long it took for my EP deliveries here in Denver.

Thanks guys! The 1 working day travel time is only for the east coast at the moment but 2 days is pretty quick too :)
It can be quicker to the US than to certain parts of the UK. Mad but true.

Excellent choice one of my favourite colours

Yeah, it says on their website that some folks in the US get their shipment in only 1 day :)

It's funny, when I mail order something (anything) from within my own state of Maryland, it takes weeks!!LOL!!

I'm too lazy to check right now, but do you guys sell the replacement bulbs for the Astro's?

I always like to have a few spare on hand :)

Thanks, I am looking forward to it :)

I hate to sound mean, but I am not buying any more lamps from lavaLite unless they are the originals from Fleabay.

After my past experience with them, and even though Paula was very nice (lets see how long it takes to get my

replacement Grande globe!!!), I dont approve of US companies farming their own work out to China, which is

practicly slave labour!

I would like to get a Astro with clear liguid, but only noticed one available on the EP website.

Do you know if any more sellection is upcoming?

Hey stanley, I even though some people wont aprove my opinion on this, but I would strongly advise you to buy mathmos lamps from ebay which are 5 -10 years+ old as they have "improved" (made cheaper for them) the formula...the old one seem to stay clear and well flowing forever and the newer ones have caused me quite some trouble! But dont let this upset you, your's might be working perfectly anyway!

I have never heard of anyone haveing long term problem with the modern Mathmos formula except a few

reports about "grainyness" which went any with normal use.

I fear you may start an argument if you are inferring that Mathmos has slacked on their QC :)

Anyway, it is quite rare to find older Mathmos lamps on Fleabay.

Some folks selling old LL's, dont always list in their auction that it was made by Mathmos.

Then my hat's off to Mathmos for hanging in there and I am happy they did the right thing (quality over quantity).

I know lava lamps have been a strange market, going up and down.

They had surge in popularity in the 80's with the college student crowd, but that didnt last long.

It seems now that LL's are having yet another comeback with us nostalgic 50's baby boomers who are established

and have money (unlike college kids :)

Outsoursing can be a huge QA/QC nightmare if proper supervision is not maintained.

I do not mind buying stuff made in China, lots of it is fine, but to often, the quality of the product goes downhill.

Not to mention, Americans loosing their jobs.

Hey Stanley Congratulations on the Astro. I hope you enjoy the lamp as much as we enjoy our Mathmos lamps. I'd like to weigh in on a few things here. In late 1990s, the lava lamp saw a massive revival in the pop-culture and became just as popular as it was in the 1960s and the 1970s, in fact it actually sold more in the 1990s than all the previous decades combined. Towards the end of the 1990s Mathmos faced a situation where there were cheaper copies of the lamps being made in Taiwan and China and they saw the sales of their lamps drop once again. Further to this there was also "Lavaworld Europe" now known as "Lava Lite Europe" who distribute their lamps in Europe.

Instead of shutting down the factories and outsourcing them to the far east, Mathmos decided that whilst they wouldn't be the only manufacturer of the lamps, they would be the best. Mathmos lava lamps are hand filled in the UK, they utilise the derived formula invented by the lamps inventor Edward Craven Walker. Whilst Mr Walker did sell the rights to the USA, they never disclosed the formula. Mathmos then started a process of diversification and introduced new ambient lights some powered by candle, some by LEDs and some by their patented Airswitch technology.

I have no trouble with anything made in China, however I believe that the quality needs to there. For example when someone purchaes an item from Apple, it is indeed manufactured in China, but the quality is amazing.

I personaly am fine with outsourcing to China. It makes items cheaper and gives people in China jobs. If everything were made in America then so many people would go to factories who could do medical research, ext. China just lowers quality which is the only down side, which isn't enough.

P.S I have been buying China lamps alot lately and they run great. Clear, good coil, and good flow
