Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I'm thinking about taking some lamps to my family beach house on the Jersey shore. Problem is, the beach house is not heated and unoccupied during the winter and the temperature can get below freezing. Would covering them with a blanket in the off season suffice?

At what temperatures are there problems with the lamps freezing and/or breaking?

Older lamps tend to handle slightly sub zero temperatures fairly well (the glycol in the older lamps is a type of antifreeze). However, if the temperature drops way down you may have issues. I'm not sure how the newer formula lamps handle the cold.
My advice- if you value the lamps, don't leave them there over the winter.
Yikes!
