Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I received a 52 oz lamp for Christmas this year, and upon plugging it in the wax melted and congealed into one big glob that moved slowly up and down inside the globe. I returned it to Spencer's because i thought it was something wrong with the lamp...however after i got my new lamp i encountered the same problem. If any one could shed some light on why this is happening I would greatly appreciate it.

orange lava with purple water
any ideas as to what is wrong?
Alright thanks a lot for the help...if the coil is bad..then is there anything I can do to fix it?
I have a similar problem and unfortunately the Spencer's I got it from (which I work at) is closing and therefore won't be getting any more lamps. Is there any other way to fix it? I really love this colour.
I have this same problem with my Century (clear/red) lamp, except that most of the wax congeals at the top, then breaks off, falls back to the bottom, and eventually flies back up again, where the cycle starts all over again. My topic is here.
