Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I have noticed on the new Mathmos website that it says they can sell worldwide, I really wish they would step up and give LavaWorld a punch to the face, go to court if they have to and see what the courts say. Im quite sick of LavaWorld protecting their sad products and wish Mathmos could have a US dealer. I know about electricplanet which I give major props to for shipping to the US, I just wish it was alittle cheaper on the shipping end which is not their fault.

If you read the 3rd paragraph under the 1963-1988 page it says it all...

"The product was manufactured in Poole, Dorset, as it still is today, and sold all over the world in large numbers. Mr. Walker also sold a licence to manufacture and sell his invention in the USA to an American company, Haggerty, in 1966 for the duration of the patent. All patents have now expired and all companys are free to sell their product all over the world"

I know LavaWorld was behind "plushpod" being stopped from selling the Fluidium in the US. I wonder why nobody will stand up to them and just give them a kick. The patent is over, expired, done. Time for a regular dealer of Mathmos products in the US. LavaWorld continues to release garbage products and it seems like they are trying to clear their junk from the warehouse before they file bankrupcy and finally disappear....we can only hope.

Thoughts and comments please...

I, believe that mathmos should keep the rights for the lamp in the uk. It was invented by us and so many company's try from the us try to run british companys. It is one good thing that is still made in britain. Yes i agree with you that lavaworld has lost it touch. If the us had the orignal patant then everyone would make copys of cheap crap.
You seem to know wat the new Mathmos lava lamp is going to be. Can you fill us in?
If you can't tell us can you say approximately when it might be released and how much money we'll have to start saving to get one...? ;)

Bump - Harry Simmonds to the courtesy phone please.  :-)

Some on this site have a belief that the legal restrictions imposed by Lava Lite that essentially locked Mathmos out of the US have since expired.  Meaning Mathmos should be able to sell their lamps freely within the US.  Do you know anything regarding this and can you maybe give us an inkling on next steps?

Would be much better situated on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.  ;-)

Chicago is ground zero for American motion lamps (Lava Lite and the Florence Art Company).  It would be most appropriate if they set up shop in Lava Lite's backyard.

Gotcha.  I know Dr. What had posted a thread comment pointing out the expiration of the original contract.  Didn't realize that they double-downed on this silly legal injunction.  What a bummer!

For some reason Mathmos can sell all over the world but not in the USA and looks like Canada also. LW aka LL has it locked up tight because Mathmos a few yrs ago forgot to do a new contract arrangement to get away from the old one with LW and LW jumped in to nail it down fast and to keep them out for a very long time. Who knows what the next step is .

Sure, keep the rights there, but sell that product here. Same formula, just less expense to us for shipping. Heck, import some Brits over here. Even better!

I fantasize about one day being able to buy a Mathmos lamp here. I honestly do think the part of the reason Mathmos has been able to stay as genuine as they have is that product is located where they're located.

Personally, I don't care WHERE it is...  Train, plane, or automobile, I'm THERE!!  :)

Per their Facebook page:

"Mathmos Originals Hi Damien, this issue with shortly be resolved as we will will start distributing to the US shortly. if you would like to sign up to our mailing list by following the link below we will inform you as soon as our products are avaiable..www.mathmos.com"

Ummmm, yay!  I would love for these to be available at some sort of brick and mortar store.  Nothing beats finding your treasure on the shelf, bringing it home and firing it up hours (or minutes) later.  A nice introduction to their US customers would be a limited edition USA-only lunar as a tribute to the retirement of the shuttle program.  ;-)

Finally a way to buy mathmos lamps without having to sell my kidneys!
I think its only a matter of time before Mathmoss starts selling in  the US, I mean its probably  a gold mine for them  when they can get the legal bull**** out of the way. However it would be a relatively big investment as it would mean opening shops, warehouse, distribution links etc, and in these times it seams like a bit of a gamble. However with a bit of a push from the US customers they might sort it out sooner.

I still think that they should stay making the lamps in Pool and / or elsewhere in the UK as going to China or anywhere else will be a disaster.

As for new releases - we can only wait and see but hopefully they will remake the lunars and jets etc and it would be nice to see a colossus size astro :) - that will give LL a final kick in the ass.
