Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi, all I have just won two metallic Astro  bottles off ebay and was wondering which are  the best bases for these bottles to sit on? The older brushed aluminium type or was considering buying two of the polished chrome bases and caps from Mathmos to really complement these bottles. I was wondering if they will fit either of these bases, also will a 40w  golf ball bulb be the right bulb for these bottles.

Hi Bohdan thanks for the reply regarding which bases and bulbs to use for the metallic bottles. I will have to check out a dimmer switch as I have never used one of these before. Are you talking about a plug in type where you just plug the existing three pin plug of the lamp into? Looked at some on Amazon and Ebay and they seem to have a row of dots going from smaller to larger dots - do you know if  they come with instructions as to which dot would be in the 30w range.
Hi Richard, thanks for the reply to use the brushed aluminium bases to keep them original. Are these the ones with the Mathmos logo printed in red on the base or the ones with the Mathmos  logo embossed into the base? and is the cap the plain one or should it have the Mathmos logo sticker on as well? Had a reply from Bohdan about using a dimmer switch to run them in the 30w range so  as to stop them from getting too hot and causing them to cloud up faster. But see you are running yours on 40w frosted golf bulbs with no problems - do Mathmos sell these or is it best to get them off Ebay or the local DIY store. How long is the ideal time to run these for, regarding hours at a time and how many times a week .
Hi Bill, they came with 40w golf ball bulbs originally, and I have always run them with 40w bulbs until i cant bear the blobs splitting up any smaller-usually about 4-5 hours and have as yet have no problems with clouding at all. The advantages/disadvantages of using a 30w bulb is that the was will not split as quickly into the little globules, but will take a lot longer to get going. Are you in US or UK? If in US Lowes or Home Depot if in UK B&Q or Homebase will have what you need. Good luck
