Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I have an issue with my lamp.  Hopefully I'm not overlooking something painfully obvious.  I just pulled my lamps out of storage and discovered my Carlisle had no bulb.  I purchased a 40 watt S11 intermediate bulb, which fits perfectly in the socket.  However, when I sit the bottle on top, it doesn't fit!  The bottom of the glass hits the bulb and won't seat.  I don't understand it.  I used this lamp years ago without issue.  What am I overlooking or doing wrong??  It looks to me like there is no bulb that will work, yet it had in the past.

Thanks,

john
