Question about the lava lamp.....

when people say you shouldn't leave your lava lamp for more than 8 hours,
is the 1-2 hours to get it started included in the 8 hours?

K i got a question I got a lamp from ebay its a blue eletrik, It looks great got the box and ever thing but the lava heats up and goes into the im to hot phase right away and sits there no matter what base i put it on ( switched it around hoping it would work better ) does this mean the wax is burnt up?
