replacing the liquid on a mathmos mettalic?

my mathmos gold/silver mettalic lamp domes but won't rise or fall.

clearly the liquid is something strange- thick, gloopy, not salt water.

anyone ever manage to revitalise on or am i onto a loser?

i did try the bulb from an astro - the mettalic is an astrobaby - i stopped that after 20 mins when smoke started coming out - really!
