just heating up, if i look closely, there are a lot of air bubbles.
I am very new at this so the advice that I am giving may not even apply but it appears that the wax has only started to melt. All lamps that I have ever had start out this way. As they heat up (1 to 4 hrs) they begin to work.

How long was the light on when you took the pic? Also look at the bottom of the lamp and make sure the coil is lying flat and not partially on its side.

Don't ditch it. You can use the container to add or to change both liquid and wax. the other members with a lot more experience I am sure will reply. They also can advise you how to chang fluid and wax.

Remember this advice is from very limited experience and knowledge. I hope it will help and lava will flow!
thank you! it has only been an hour or so but it did the same yesterday for about 3 hours. ill give it another go
Check the bulb wattage. There should be a label inside of the base showing the proper wattage bulb for that lamp. If it is the proper wattage, give it time. If the coil in not flat on the bottom it can take several hours to melt the wax, at which point the coil should settle to the bottom. If the wax is melted and the coil is not on the bottom, gently swirl the lamp to make the coil fall, but do NOT shake the lamp.
I laughed at "gay lamp"
