I have become obsessed with lava lamps. I love vintage everything, especially lava lamps. My favorite is the Consort. I've yet to find one. I really love tweaking cheap lamps. I get a great sense of accomplishment when I fix a lamp that was not flowing or cloudy!

My First Lava Lamp was:
My first lava lamp was bought on E-bay. It is an aristocrat with a starlight base from the 70's. It no longer has it's original wax but it is still, by far my favorite!
Glad you found a fellow member's advice helpful. Dj's a good guy and really friendly and helpful to folks.
My weekend's panning out great thanks as i've already managed to score a couple of really nice mathmos jet lava lamps from a boot sale (like a yard sale) here in the uk both in lurid technicolour bodies! very collectible and they make up my missing ones too.
Have a great w/e yourself

Ok, I've got another question. I have one big column of wax now instead of flowing bubbles. Did I add too much salt? Also, is there anyway to change the color of the lava? Jerome-Good luck at the car boot sale, I think that's the way to go cause I always end up spending way too much on ebay.
That is another great idea for me to plan on doing. This site has given me so many ideas for projects! Now for the time to do them! Btw, do know of any shops in OKC that have lava-lamps? We don't get up there enough to find all of the good shopping places.
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for the "Hello" and comment. Filtering really made a big difference in the clarity of my red Giant. Like you mentioned, fixing up older Lava Lamps is rewarding indeed..:)

Actually, WalMart is the only place that has them and from what I was just told by LumiSource Inc, - the company that makes them, they stopped making them a couple years ago so they are no longer made. Explains why mine only cost $5 bux last nite.
Yeah, they are really clear. I have the same color combo. It's not my favorite color. Blue/Neon Yellow. Never been a fan. I might bleach it to be clear/yellow. I can deal with that :)
I too am going to do some calling around and see if I can find any other color combos. How did you deal with the cap on these? I know they are not like lava lite caps. They are more like the grande caps.
I am currently calling WalMarts seeing if they have any more in stock at all, let alone different colors. Don't think they will from the sounds of it.
As for the bleaching - no no no.. don't use bleach :) Hehe. Put the tube out in the sun and in a few days the liquid will be clear. Or to keep the wax new - remove the liquid and put it in another bottle - then put that bottle out there. Keeps the wax from getting messed up. However, I have done it with/without and never had an issue.
The springs are really easy to make. The material can be bought at lowes. Just stretch it out, leave 1/4" on each end unstretched and once done, join the two ends together and woila - new and improved coil!
If you try to join them straight up and down, it will be very difficult, near impossible. If you angle the springs, they go together much easier. Does that make sense?
Squish the spring end so it kinda lays flat - or tries to. That's how you do it. Depending on the spring thickness, you might need some needle nose pliers to do that.
Happy Bithday Jennifer and congratulations on the birth of your little baby in December.
I've been very well thank you apart from a little problem with my leg at Christmas. all better now. Getting more involved with the Goo and my collection of lava and glitter lamps.
I did not change out the fluid in my clear/white lamp. I filtered it and changed the coil in hopes of fixing it. After I change the coil, it took off like mad and has flowed perfectly ever since. The metal the coil is made of now, is much thicker than the previous coils metal. If/when you replace it you will see. Big difference. I am not sure what cause the lava not to stick initially to the older coil.
I'm gonna have to try your recipe now! I want to learn to make glitter lamps too. It seems like glitter would be easy, but I've been told that the chemicals are toxic. I dunno....
I like the small bubbles too. Here is a shot of my alien and newest Giant, I love this flow!

I am a big wuss....I have yet to embark upon making my own lava. I do repours and custom colors and bases, but just haven't had the guts to make the lava yet. (If you want to see some of my custom work check some of my stuff out on e-bay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=300303134987 )
The light bulb is a repour out of a yellow lamp. The bulb part is a vintage salad old dispenser that I found on ebay ($3!) and I sealed the top where the oil would come out and created a base for it. It was so quick and easy to make and everyone likes it.
I hope to get enough nerve soon to try the lava. I may need to ask you some questions (if you don't mind) as I go along.
Thanks!

I have sooooo many lamps that I can't remember where they all came from! I have had the candle lamp for a long time, so I think that it is vintage. With over 150 lamps it is hard to recall the details! I hope that you win the candle lamp! It is so cool! I have decided to take my collection down to an even 100 lamps....so some have got to go! I briefly considered keeping only the grandes and 52 oz. but the 32oz have so many color combinations that you can't find anywhere else!

The wax does have to be white with our LED application. That video is an old one. I am working on getting the new video done now. Here is some pics of our 7 foot model with LEDs.
The consumer does mix their color. We have premixed in the past on special occasion. If you search "Louie" in the photo page you will see a couple of the revamps people have done including a green lamp.
White is my favorite as well. We once made a white marble base with white lava and it just looked amazing.
HI Jennifer!
The "light bulb" bottle is actually about a foot tall. I have one of the small ones (about 5 inches or so) and I was going to try to make one out of it..but it was just too tiny! This lamp has to be one of my favorites...glad you like it!
Are you still making your own goo?
Thank you for your response. yes i'm making my own lamp, and the bottle is factory clean, so i think that has no dust inside, i try the formula for the water an the ooze and is sticking the same. I made a lauryl sulfate solution for the tensoactive, at first hand i had the idea that it need more, but the problem grow as i ad more formula, so i make a new one, new ooze, with the half of tensoactive solution, and the sticking grows as a 4cm per hour till reach the top.
any ideas.
thanks

Yea, the glitter was slow and elegant flow, I put a 15 watt under it one time, and also a 25 watt and of course it will flow faster with the 25 watt. If you do ever switch to another jar, I would go over to not only olive section, but all the really "fancy" condiment and sauce isle, sometimes even the ethnic food section. The spanish food brand "Goya" I saw the other day had a few varieties of bottles (this was at SuperTarget) that looked slimmer than the one I sent you, but possibly too slim for the Mediterranean. Remember they are not just olive bottles, they usually are, but look for pastes, sauces, and marinades. What I recommend is tracing your Med. bottle on a piece of paper like in grade school. And take it with you to the store so you know what size will fit. If it's a little slimmer and wiggles in the base or teeters, you can take strips of aluminum foil and wrap it around the bottle bottom so it securely sits upright. Hope all that helps! And have fun tinkering =)
