I use the food dye that goes with the air brush food grade guns. They sell it at Michael's. Seems to hold better and you only need 1 drop or 2 whereas the supermarket food colors you need quite a few, especially the lighter colors.
The color seems richer with the highliter ink than the supermarket food colors. Food dyes from a baker specialty store are a good choice also.
Good to know there's no fading Keith, I scored a violet/orange Astro Lamp from a charity store this week. the violet fluid has almost faded to clear and want to dye it green... I think your highlighter method is the best way to go.
