This version looks a lot more finished. It is basically a scaled up version
of the 32oz starship with holes in the legs. It is UL certified and ready
to be produced. It may make it into production next year, but don't get
your hopes up too much. The costs are currently too high.

The retailers have a huge say in what Lava Lite can charge for products. A large product like the grande must be priced in a way that makes it an efficient use of shelf space. This means that Lava Lite has to find a way to meet this price point. They can choose to make less money on the product, cut the quality of the product, or choose another method. Lava Lite will does not want to make a cheap grande starship, so they chose to hold back on its release until it can be a high quality profitable lamp. A deluxe line will just cost them money if nobody will carry the lamps in their store. When they put in orders to the manufacturer they have to buy huge volumes of lamps. If they put in a small order for deluxe lamps the cost to make these lamps go up. Think economy of scale. When production moves to the USA Lava Lite will be able to make smaller batches of lamps themselves and the costs won't go up as much compared to having lamps made in China.
I am curious about the "costs are currently too high" comment Autumn. I completely understand if you can't divulge specifics, but I wonder as a ballpark figure how much they feel this would need to be priced at compared to a standard Grande to be a viable offering and provide a decent profit margin. A Grande's MSRP is something like $90, whereas a Giant was $300 - $350 (please correct me if I'm wrong). I wonder if they are trying to make this work around a pre-determined MSRP, and if so, what that may be. I just wonder what their research is telling them about the price tolerance of consumers on a lamp like this; I know I for one would certainly expect to pay more for this than a Grande, and would happily do so.
I know it still probably comes back to their big box sellers like Walmart and Target, but they need the ability to have a differentiated product line, a premium line like Toyota has Lexus and Nissan has Infiniti. Sell it as a Spencer's exclusive, the Lava Lite Deluxe line - $200-$250.
I am going to take an opinion that will probably give me some flack, but I never really cared for the lunars shape. I think it looks like a toy rocket. I'd prefer a giant sized version of the telstar. I do like the lamp though and if it didn't cost $1,000 I would get one. I always liked the 32oz starship, and making a 250oz version makes me like it even more.
Yea - I would like to know the price, but my guesstimate would be the $200 range which I sense Lava Lite may think will be too too high for consumers. Doesn't change the fact that for most of us a Lunar is simply unattainable due to its price. My wife would feed my balls to the dog if I spent what you spend on lamps James. ;-)
When you factor in price, I sense that I am not alone in preferring this over a Lunar. I just don't see the value in a Lunar for American collectors; $1000+ is simply too much for that lamp in my opinion. Yes, if money were not an issue I would love an armada of Lunars. It would likely be a different story if I could have gotten a Lunar at MSRP (not sure what that even was) with sane shipping charges, but the secondary market is, in my opinion, obscene for Lunars.
Lunar versus Grande Starship + meal for two at Morton's steak house + weekend getaway for two at a B&B in the country? No offense, but its a slam dunk for me.
top looks a million times better... and flow from other shot seems to be acting the way it should
this is way cooler then the colossus one by far.
I don't know about this giving the Colossus a run for its money, but might give a Lunar some competition. The Lunar still has it beat on base finish, but nothing flows like a Giant (if they can get Grandes to flow like Giants that is).
Yea da its higher then a grande - it has a grande globe and scaled up legs and body etc.
It would be really nice to see this go into production - it would certainty give the colossus a run for its money.
