Well, you won't find THESE at Spencer's anymore, they are gone, they're not selling them anymore and only sold them for a short period of time, the globes are glass and the bases are plastic, the bases have always been plastic, on all the major plasma globes down to originals from the early 80s The ones they carry at spencers now are these http://www.spencersonline.com/images/spencers/products/interactivez...

they have a completely different chemistry on the inside of them and react differently.

That is sooo cool!!!  Nice globe.  I want one of those, but I don't know if those ones at Spencer's are worth it.  The base is plastic.  Were the older ones from the 80's plastic (the base).  I think the globe itself is glass.
