Playing with the exposure setting on the camera. If I go
any less than this, the 'bulb flare' is gone, but the colors
change and it looks dark.

looks great!  have you tried adjusting the white balance?  that's a good trick to taking photos of lamps in the dark without making them look dark by lowering the EV.
