Well I bought a cookie jar, missing lid, on ebay for $35.

I used a spare 32oz globe and goo'ed it. 

Used lamp parts; socket, hollow threaded rod, nuts,

various washers, cord with a dimmer and a 40w bulb.

The ceramic cookie jar holds the heat so 40w is plenty

and I have to dim it after two hours.

Took a 32oz base and cut it below the seem and

flared it out and pop riveted it to a soup can.

Takes some time to get the socket height and soup

can/base height. (I can take measurements)

The *hardest* part of this project was to 'hog out' the

cookie jar opening to make it match the diameter of

the top of a 32oz base.  This way the globe sits flush.

Ceramic is very hard !  I used files, dremel tool with different

tips anything I could think of and it kicked the shit out of it all.

I did manage to finish it off with a 40 grit cone shaped sanding

fabric like material.  I used four of them @ $12 each.  We use

these at work to chamfer the top of cylinders on harleys.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't mess with the ceramic opening

and just make it work.

I think its pretty easy analog.  Hardest part is being able to stomach a trip to Ikea.  Drill a hole in the base for the cord, get inner cone + electrical from Ikea, voila.  Check this thread.

Voxul - the lamp doesn't exactly "exist", rather the smiley face base exists as a cookie jar that can be modded to create a lava lamp base.  One of the most popular cookie jars to mod on this site.  Expect the cookie jar, on average, to set you back ~ $50.  Its made by the iconic McCoy company.  I actually have several of these as have had plans to create this lamp myself, just lacking in motivation.  There are several finishes available as shown in my pics below.
