Going to be doing that to one of my Coaches now. I just have to go buy the CLR, SOS pads and Barkeeper's Friend - I actually don't have any of those lying around. Either way, it'll look really good with a white/blue globe, more nautical compared to the copper Coach's more Colonial appearance.

i took it all apart and took out all the electrical and let the parts soak in the sink in a some CLR and water for an hour or so. that loosened the rust on the inside and softened the lacquer (what was left of it) on the outside. then i used sos soap pads and barkeepers friend to scrub off the lacquer. there is probably an easier way to remove it but i just used what i had on hand. once all the laquer was gone i rinsed off the barkeepers friend and used only the sos pads untill the aluminum is shiny. they work great for polishing aluminum and since its a soft metal this will also remove most of the scratches. then i rewired it using parts from a spare china lamp.

Can you send me a note with the process you used to refinish all the parts, approximately? I might like to do that to one of my pair, since it's not a super-rare lamp.

shure, it was originaly a dark red/clear brass color gen 3 coach. i found it in an antique shop in horrible shape and rescued it. the brass finish was mostly gone, the inside rusty, the wiring was shot and so was the wax. i cycled it for a week and when it started to flow it got really bubbly and it looked like the wax was breaking down. so i stripped off what was left of the old finish, polished up the aluminum and re wired it. and stuck a lava world globe in it. i think it looks pretty good :) i might goo kit the original globe.
